چکیده

Two iron piano-stool complexes containing NHC ligands equipped with hydroxyl-containing pendent arms (aliphatic and aromatic) have been prepared via deprotonation of the imidazolium salts with a strong base. Access to the anionic ligand is afforded with an additional equivalent of base when the wingtip contains a bulky phenol group. X-ray crystallography and DFT calculations demonstrate an apparent delocalization of the resulting negative charge, which evidently stabilizes the complex. The strongly donating ligands affect the electronic environment at the Fe center to a degree measurable using FTIR spectroscopy. The complexes were screened for catalytic transfer hydrogenation of benzaldehyde, acetophenone and benzophenone using 2-propanol as a solvent and hydrogen donor. The molecular complexes under visible light do not show reactivity towards reduction of carbonyls. Attempts to boost catalyst turnover under in situ conditions using UV light resulted in an unwanted photo-induced pinacolization of acetophenone in both cases and decomposition of the aromatic-containing NHC complex to an iron mirror.

Synthesis and Characterization of Homo and Heterobimetallic Complexes with a Dicompartmental Macrocyclic Ligand Containing Propionitrile Pendent Arms

A binuclear macrocyclic ligand containing dissimilar N(amine)2O2 and N(imine)2O2 coordination sites sharing two phenolic oxygen atoms, was prepared by cyclic condensation of dialdehyde precursor L1H2 with 1,3-diaminopropane. The ligand includes two propionitrile pendant arms on the amine nitrogen atoms. The homobimetallic com...

Chiral iridium(I) bis(NHC) complexes as catalysts for asymmetric transfer hydrogenation

The common use of NHC complexes in transition-metal mediated C–C coupling and metathesis reactions in recent decades has established N-heterocyclic carbenes as a new class of ligand for catalysis. The field of asymmetric catalysis with complexes bearing NHC-containing chiral ligands is dominated by mixed carbene/oxazoline or carbene/phosphane chelating ligands. In contrast, applications of comp...

Rhodium(III) Complexes Containing C4-Bound N-Heterocyclic Carbenes: Synthesis, Coordination Chemistry, and Catalytic Activity in Transfer Hydrogenation

Direct metalation of C2-protected diimidozolium salts with RhCl3 or [RhCl(cod)]2 and KI afforded a series of new rhodium(III) complexes with abnormally C4-bound, cis-chelating NHC ligands. The complexes were isolated as dimetallic species containing two (μ-I)3-bridged rhodium(III) centers. In the presence of coordinating ligands such as CH3CN, PPh3, or dppe, the dimeric structure is readily cle...

Chiral bicyclic NHC/Ir complexes for catalytic asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketones.

A diverse series of chiral bicyclic NHC/Ir complexes were prepared via a previously developed divergent synthesis of chiral imidazolium salts. Among the complexes, 8dz was found to be an excellent catalyst precursor for the Ir-catalyzed asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketones. The reaction of ketones with 8dz proceeded smoothly to give corresponding alcohols with high enantioselectivities ...

N-heterocyclic carbenes of iridium(I): ligand effects on the catalytic activity in transfer hydrogenation.

New Ir-NHC complexes based on different heterocyclic moieties like imidazole, benzimidazole and imidazolidine are presented and tested in transfer hydrogenation catalysis. A broad range of steric and electronic properties of NHC ligands is covered to give an idea for catalyst design from the experimental point of view.
